Have you heard? Cost Plus Drugs is an online prescription drug marketplace backed by entrepreneur, Marc Cuban. It could prove to be a model for Medicare too.
The government could potentially save billions as a cost comparison with current rates.
NBC news reports, a price comparison study was conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The study compared (2022) prescription drug prices at Cost Plus Drugs online pharmacy, and Medicare Part D plans in 2020.
Paying for 77 of the same generic drugs purchased at Cost Plus Drugs’ online pharmacy, versus the U.S. government’s Medicare system price was nearly twice as much at $8.1 billion total!
Though the Medicare program wasn’t involved in the research, it seems to have others thinking.
“Saving $3.6 billion is certainly worth pursuing if there’s an opportunity to get that amount of savings,” said Juliette Cubanski, deputy director of the program on Medicare policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation.
