Travel Insurance, Medicare Coverage Recipients Who Like to Travel Should Pick Up a Travel Policy When They're On the Go

Travel insurance is a good bet if you want to be covered with insurance for traveling abroad. For those of you usually covered by Medicare when stateside, you’ll need travel insurance when traveling to foreign destinations in case you need medical care or access to prescription drugs.
If you’re like us, and you like to travel, travel insurance coverage can help keep your out of pocket expenses low for things like medical or prescription drug expenses in case it’s needed while traveling.

Normally covered by Medicare when you’re at home in the USA? There are very few exceptions, but you’re generally not covered by Medicare if you’re outside of the USA and its territories.

Planning on leaving US soil? Purchase travel insurance coverage in case you’re faced with an unexpected need for medical care, or need to access your prescription medications.

There are a few instances when Medicare might cover your medical expenses when traveling internationally. Like if you’re driving through Canada between Alaska and the continental United States, you need medical assistance and the closest hospital is on your route. Or, if you’re in the United States or its territories, and a hospital (within a certain radius) is actually closer to you on foreign soil, than you are located to a US based hospital; you’ll probably get coverage through Medicare.

Taking a cruise? Medicare is only going to cover you while in a US port, or within six miles of its shores.

Basically, if you’re traveling, don’t risk it! Get travel insurance coverage.

When you’re travel planning, make sure to take into account your medical needs! There can be a lot of expenses associated with travel. Consider figuring in your travel insurance coverage. It can mean a great deal of savings for you if you’re faced with a medical dilemma when traveling.
