One-Time Special Enrollment

A one-time special enrollment period is coming up in 2021 that we want you to be aware of.  If you’re a Medicare beneficiary with either Medigap Plan C or Plan F, you’ll want to pay close attention!

As the Colorado Division of Insurance phases out Medigap Plans C and F, a special enrollment period is now finalized. This will allow holders of Medigap Plans C and F to transition to a Plan D or Plan G.

This one-time period will allow Medigap enrollees, including those with pre-existing conditions affecting their health, to update their plan without medical underwriting.

Special Enrollment Period Details

  • Runs January 1, 2021 – June 30, 2021
  • For anyone who became eligible for Medicare prior to 2020, and is currently enrolled in Medigap Plan C or F
  • Plan C holders may switch to any available Plan D
  • Plan F holders may switch to any available Plan G
  • Only one plan change per plan holder during the special enrollment period

Phasing Out Popular Plans

Though Medigap Plans C and F have long been a favorite, a legislation was enacted in 2015 requiring the plans could no longer be sold to folks just becoming eligible for coverage.  2019 was the last year to enroll for Plan C or F Medigap coverage.

Medigap Plans C and F were the only plans to cover the Part B deductible.  The thought among legislators was that healthcare users would be more judicious in the use of healthcare resources by putting in for some out-of-pocket charges.

The Part B Deductible

Legislation requires a Medicare beneficiary to cover a small portion of out-of-pocket-charges when seeking medical treatment, also known as the Part B deductible.  In 2020 the Part B deductible is $198.
