wildfire, southwest, preparedness

The 2022 wildfire season roared in with April’s wind.  In the western U.S., wildfire fighters have graciously worked hard to control these burns.

We’ve seen the fires burn around the northern mountains of New Mexico, and around the San Juan’s of southern Colorado.

Hopefully we’ll lock in some rain in the Southwest!  No matter what, it’s good to remain vigilant in your efforts to maintain your property before a wildfire happens in your area.

With wildfires, danger can grow rapidly.  It’s important to have an evacuation plan in place!

10 steps you can make to prepare your home:

  1. Shut windows, doors, and vents.
  2. Turn off the gas.
  3. Turn off propane tanks and move them away from the house.
  4. Shut off your a/c.
  5. Turn off outdoor sprinkler systems.
  6. Leave your exterior lights on.
  7. Remove potential combustibles from your patio.
  8. Place a ladder against your home.
  9. Clean up leaves, pine needles, and other flammables from gutters and vicinity of home.
  10. Pay attention to local updates for fire information and evacuation orders.
