Preparedness for Healthcare Needs

During a declared disaster or emergency, it may be necessary to find other options for Doctors, Pharmacy’s, and Durable Medical Equipment.

Knowing what our options are in case of an emergency, is always a good idea.  Have you thought of the healthcare needs you have, and how you might maintain those needs during a temporary displacement?

Info at Medicare.gov, shows some guidelines for things you should keep in mind when considering getting care during a disaster or emergency.

If a natural disaster occurs, an emergency is declared, and conditions require moving to a safer area with medical care, other options may need to be considered for your healthcare needs.

As far as Medicare goes, here’s some of what you should consider.

Seeing doctors during an emergency

With original Medicare, any doctor who accepts Medicare is available to you.  With Medicare Advantage plans, or any other Medicare plan, you should contact your healthplan for advice on what to do in these situations. The potential for using out-of-network care should be asked about.

Getting Prescription Drugs

With in-network pharmacy’s, prescription drugs can generally be temporarily aquired at a safe location, and then transferred back to your home pharmacy when emergency situations have ended.
If you need to use an out-of-network pharmacy, you should contact your Medicare drug plan.

Accessing Critical Care, Replacing Durable Medical Goods

Cancer treatments, dialisys, or other special care may need to be accessed through different providers.

You can find more information on finding critical care, and replacing durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, or other needs at this link from Medicare.gov.
