San Juan County, NM Fire Chief Awarded Medal of Valor

Taking quick action, then Deputy Chief Vega, rescued a resident from the burning structure.

San Juan County Medal of Valor

Congratulations to Chief David Vega on receiving the San Juan County Fire & Rescue Medal of Valor.

Everyone at HomeTown Insurance and Financial is proud of the Chief for his heroic efforts to save a victim from a structure fire in Aztec, New Mexico.

Notes on Chief Vega’s recognition during the San Juan County Commissioners May meeting follow below.

At the May 23rd County Commission Meeting, Fire Chief David Vega was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a structure fire call in December of 2021.

The Medal of Valor is the highest award in service of San Juan County Fire & Rescue.
The, at the time, Deputy Chief, was the first unit to respond to a structure fire north of Aztec. As he arrived, he was informed that one of the residents was in the burning structure. With little regard for his personal welfare, he literally dragged this person to safety and calmly radioed San Juan County Communications Authority to expedite medics for that victim.
He was nominated because his actions likely saved that person’s life.
We believe this to be the first San Juan County Fire Chief to be awarded the Medal of Valor.
